In 2015 efforts were initiated for a complete restoration of the Apollo Mission Control Center (MCC) as the National Historic Landmark had fallen into disrepair and disrespect. An expert restoration team was assembled to convey with historic accuracy, the scientific, political, and technological achievements of Apollo Mission Control where NASA flight controllers landed the first men on the moon. We will hear from Stern and Bucek Architects, David Bucek, FAIAJordan Shelton, and Delaney Harris-Finch, as they discuss theproject that included restoring all interior finishes, furniture, and artifacts; and staging the area to their appearance during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission. Extensive historic research informed every design decision; the team referenced original construction plans, internal memos, historic photographs and film; performed onsite architectural forensics; and interviewed over twenty retired Apollo flight controllers. The restoration was completed in July 2019 in time for the Apollo 11 50th anniversary.
